Crossdressed for Halloween...with Friends!!

crossdressing as Minnie Mouse for HalloweenBelieve it or not, it's been 15 years since I've actually been able to dress up as a girl on Halloween. Several years ago, Heidi suggested that we dress up as witches and do a photo shoot at a fun shopping village near us that decorates its grounds with Halloween themes, and while that was a truly memorable experience and photo shoot, it didn't occur on October 31st, and so I was way excited a few weeks ago when I found out that I had the chance to dress up this year for Halloween...not only as a girl but as an actual girl character.

a view from behind of my Minnie Mouse costumeAs I detailed in my previous blog entry, I decided that it would be fun to go as Minnie Mouse, and so on a whim, I left work during lunch time and found the perfect Minnie Mouse blouse at my local thrift store. The darling blouse was pink with white polka dots, and it had the cutest ruffles and frills around the neckline and sleeves. I paired that blouse with a knee-length business skirt in black and then wore off-black nylons and modest black heels for effect.

The final touch to any Minnie Mouse costume is the ears, and I actually struggled to find the perfect ears. Looking at stores online, everyone seemed to have Minnie Mouse ears, but when I visited the actual stores to purchase them, they had nothing in stock. That would actually turn out to be a blessing in disguise because I ended up putting together my own ears, and they were way cuter than anything I could have purchased retail.

As for my Minnie ears, I narrowed down my choice to two options: buy a black headband at Hobby Lobby for $2 and then make my own ears, or I could buy some black velvet ears with sequins at the local Halloween shop and just add my own bow. After weighing the choices back and forth--and really, after finding a pink bandana at Hobby Lobby that perfectly matched my blouse for $.99, I decided to buy the nice velvet ears for $7.99 and then add the bandana bow. I didn't want an itchy headband, and I didn't want homemade ears that wilted during my day, and so the velvet ears and pink bandana was clearly the best option.

I was so nervous at home tying the bandana into the perfect bow, but when I finally got it to the perfect size and shape, I used two bobby pins to attach the bow to the ears, and viola...I had an equally fun set of Minnie ears to go with my darling Minnie Mouse blouse. To cap off the look, I found some false eye lashes at the local costume shop that had tiny red ribbons attached to the end of either lash, and I just couldn't resist purchasing them despite the $5.99 price tag.

When I put the ears and the eye lashes on the counter ready to check out, the girl working the cash register, who looked to be in her early 20's, tenderly said, "Awe, that is so cute." I actually shopped for and pieced together these accessories in guy mode, but it was still fun for her to see the combination of ears and eyelashes realizing that some lucky girl was going to be super cute for Halloween. And I was ecstatic that the lucky girl was going to be me!!

a close-up of a crossdresser's makeup for her Minnie Mouse costumeI barely slept the night before Halloween as you can imagine. As I fell asleep, I reviewed all of the details of my costume in my blonde head including some changes to my makeup that included a black circle on the tip of my nose and drawing in more exaggerated lips. As I nervously put everything together the morning of Halloween, all of the pieces just seemed to fit perfectly, and I was overjoyed when I finally affixed the mouse ears with the pink bow to my head. I had planned to meet two dear girl friends for a Halloween photo shoot and lunch, and I could not wait to get out into public cross dressed as Minnie Mouse!!  As for my two friends (Danielle and Danielle), we met up at our pre-determined meeting place and all drove to the photo shoot together.

When we arrived at the shopping village, there were parents (mostly moms) and kids dressed in costumes scurrying all around the grounds trick or treating at the various boutiques. I think all three of us felt a bit unnerved at the prospect of setting up a tripod right in the middle of the action and doing a photo shoot, but we were committed and yet discrete picking our photo opportunities among the crowds of people.
As we were walking to set up our first set of pictures, a cute little family was coming from the other direction, and the girl in the family was also dressed as Minnie Mouse!!  As soon as her little brother saw me coming, he said, "Look, a group of men crossdressing as women posing for a picture on Halloweenshe's dressed like Minnie Mouse too!!"  And there it was again...the pronoun "she."  Bless that little boy's heart for his declaration, and needless to say it made my day. I was enjoying my journey to Pink Cloud 9 so much that I failed to ask if I could take my picture with the other Minnie as Danielle chided me for afterwards, but I'm sure this won't be the last time I'm out and about on Halloween cross dressed as Minnie Mouse. : )
From this point, I suppose it's best to let the photos tell the rest of the story, but I had one more fun moment when another little girl saw me coming and said loudly, "Minnie Mouse!!" as if I was her heroine.  I stopped and smiled at her and said, "And you are a bat girl!!" as if equally fascinated at her costume, and it was way fun to have such interaction with a little angel like that. The thought did occur to me to have my picture taken with this little girl, but no other adults were taking pictures with random kids, and I just didn't feel as if it would be appropriate. So while I didn't get the pictures with the little kids, I will always have the memories of their excitement at seeing Minnie Mouse.
What a fun Halloween morning, and here are the rest of the pictures from our photo shoot!
