Attending My Favorite Musical Wicked as a Girl

I can think of no better way to crown these two weeks as Lisa than attending the theater while dressed as a girl, and today was a very special day for me, a day that I have been waiting for for at least the last five years. Over the past two weeks in my blog entries, I have made several musical references, in particularly Katy Perry and Carly Rae Jepsen. Those two girls happen to be two of the biggest names out there in pop music right now, and I love them both since music makes a huge impact on me, especially girl music. And while I enjoy multiple genres of music including pop and classical, I don't think anything stirs my soul more than a good musical. I enjoy the stage to begin with, and then when you couple that with beautiful music, I can only gasp and get weak in the knees. There is simply nothing more enjoyable in life than witnessing a touching musical played out before your eyes and ears. Okay, watching that musical dressed like a girl would top it, and that's exactly what I was able to do tonight. OMG, I finally saw Wicked!!

Okay, I will be a good girl and straighten my skirt, settle down, and try and finish this blog entry, but I am literally on top of the world right now. I first listened to the Wicked soundtrack about five years ago, and I was hooked right from the beginning. If you're not aware of the story, it is a prequel to the Wizard of Oz movie focusing on the lives of Glinda the Good Witch and Elpheba, the Wicked Witch of the West. The two girls become roommates in school, and they couldn't be more opposite from each other. Though they loathe each other at first, they eventually become close friends as the musical depicts scenes from the girls' lives and explains how each became the witches we see them as in the movie. Wicked is such a touching, personal story that also includes some very funny moments and such beautiful music that was surely inspired and not just slapped together in order to take up time. I would submit that no other musical speaks to the soul of a girl to the extent that Wicked does, and that is surely the case with me. I feel an indescribable connection to it, and so to finally see it played out tonight was magical.

I first learned that Wicked was coming to my city about a year ago, and when I saw the dates, my heart skipped about two beats because it fell within the timeline when I thought I would have these few weeks to myself in order to be a girl full time, so you could say that I have been planning today's adventure for a year. When tickets finally went on sale in March and I knew I would be all alone, I purposefully chose the night before my family would return to attend for several reasons. First, I wanted this to be the crowning jewel as my time as Lisa, and second, I wanted to be thin enough to fit into my dress.

Since I always like to talk about my outfits, let me first discuss my dress. If you've been following my blog for more than a year, then you've probably seen pictures of me in what I like to call my little black dress. I was shopping last year at a second hand store when I came across this gorgeous black dress made by Ann Taylor of all brands. Ann Taylor fashions are so elegant, and so I just had to try this dress on. The only issue was that the dress was a size 10, and as much as I'd like to say that I'm a 10, I'm more in between a size 12-14. Still, in holding this dress up at the store, it looked as if it might work, and so I took it into the fitting room and was able to somehow squeeze into it. Now, just because you can fit into a dress, it doesn't mean you can sit for three hours and still breathe let alone zip it all the way up, but I just fell in love with it and purchased it for $10 hoping that I could make it work.

The dress itself has a very high belt sewn in just below the bodice, and then there is a gorgeous bow on one side of the belt studded with rhinestones. It is also sleeveless and the exact gown that a woman would wear to the theater. But while it is pretty, it is also a tight dress on me, and when I first took pictures in it last year, I could barely breathe, so I wasn't sure if I could actually wear it to the theater this year. And as soon as my time as Lisa began this month, the very first thing I did was to try on the dress to see if it would work. It was too tight, and so I knew I would have to lose at least five pounds the next two weeks in order to fit into it. One advantage to having my family gone is that I could literally starve myself, and that's exactly what I did just so I could fit into this dress on my last day as Lisa. About every three days, I would put on the dress and then sit down in a chair and see how long I could stand it. I must say, I was very skeptical nearly the entire two weeks, but the night before Wicked, I was comfortable enough in the dress sitting down that I knew I would be able to wear it to the theater. Yay!!

I had done some shopping as a girl earlier in the day, but I wanted my makeup to be as fresh as possible, and so I removed my makeup and showered again just to be as fresh as possible for the musical. Because my dress was black, I had no other choice but to wear a black bra with matching panties today underneath, and so I slipped into those and headed to the mirror to do my face. My makeup went on in about 20 minutes since I'm really used to applying it now, and so it was next time to do my hair. I thought about using sunglasses as an accessory again, but I decided against it because I wanted to be totally formal tonight. I parted my hair towards one side and pulled the bangs across one ear, and before I knew it, I was ready for the finishing touches.
